This Year As a Teacher: By Jessica Solomon

This year as a teacher, I will have taught children about gun violence and bombs and meteors exploding in the skies. I will have said “I don’t know” a few more times than I am comfortable with and tell them that there are some queries even Google cannot fathom.

But this year as a teacher I will have taught children about stars being born and poetry being written and the importance of hospitality to strangers. I will have talked of the symmetry of snowflakes, the taste of honey on the tongue, and the sound that music makes as its vibrations reach our ears. I will have shown them how to make mistakes with grace and grit, how to break white light into a thousand different colors–colors whose names have yet to be said–, and I will have shown them how to get down on the floor when their friends drop their markers.

This year as a teacher I will have taught: the question to ask isn’t always “why?” but “what now?” I will have watched, eyes wide, as children live into the future with hearts full of hope and I will wonder at the goodness and beauty of it all.

The Tamchui Project: Teaching Kids the Mitzvah of Helping Those in Need

Still relatively green as parents, choosing a school for our then-4-year-old and nearly-6-year-old felt like a major “grown up” responsibility. What would they learn; how would they be taught? Would the school nurture their nature? And could the school selection influence who they might become? The emphasis on social justice and the mission of tikkun olam, repair of the world, drew us to Rashi, a Reform Jewish day school in the Boston metropolitan area for kindergarteners through 8th graders. Little did we understand, six years ago, that Tamchui, Rashi’s unique annual community social justice project, would have a profound impact on each of us individually and on our family collectively.

Our experience is not unique. Many in our community are deeply moved by this innovative Rashi tradition. Tamchui, an Aramaic word literally translated as “community collection plate,” dates back to medieval times, when Jewish communities gathered and distributed money and goods for the needs of the time. Those who could give did, while those who were in need took. Neighbors anonymously supporting neighbors: What could be more Jewish than that?

Every year, leading up to the holiday of Purim, the Rashi community participates in a two-week learning and philanthropic project that offers a modern day interpretation of Tamchui, including that we define community more broadly. During the celebratory time leading up to Purim, when students dress up and act silly, have parties and plays, read and listen to the Megillah, and make and distribute mishlo’ach manot, they also collectively fulfill the mitzvah of matanot le’evyonim (giving to those in need) through the unique process of Tamchui.

Between Sukkot and Hanukkah, Rashi’s faculty, staff, parents, and students nominate non-profit organizations that respond to needs of children and their families in our local, national, and global communities. A team of teachers and parents reviews the nominations (usually between 35 and 50 each year) to select five or six organizations that Rashi students and families will study and ultimately support with a monetary donation.

The first week of Tamchui, known as “Education Week,” learning involves study of the chosen organizations. This allows the students to make thoughtful, informed choices when it comes time to allocate their tokens during the following week, designated as “Donation Week.” After learning about these charities in depth, each student is given five plastic tokens that he or she apportions during Donation Week to the organizations. Each student decides how to distribute his or her own chips. Some decide to share them evenly because they find the organizations equally moving and deserving. Others may choose to allot all of their chips to one charity they find especially inspiring. Families, as well as faculty and staff members, are also asked to contribute to the Rashi Tamchui collection. The more donations received from members of the school community, the greater the value of each token. Donations are made privately, and every child receives five tokens, regardless of whether his or her family has contributed to the collective “pot.”

As a highlight to Education Week, representatives from each non-profit come to Rashi to present to the students, teachers, and parents. Meeting face-to-face and hearing from the individuals who are integrally involved in the work has a deep, long-lasting impact on the children. At Rashi, we call the representatives “tzedakah heroes” – ordinary people taking extraordinary action to help repair the world. On this culminating day, our students are given the opportunity not only to personally extend kavod (honor and respect) to the representatives, but also to consider how they (the students) themselves might apply their own passions and talents to help repair the world – now and in the future.

Through our 18-year old Tamchui project, the Rashi community has studied more than 80 child-centered organizations from all over the world and donated more than $100,000 to support their vital work. This tradition will persist far beyond its chai year!

jessica-3A few weeks ago, Diane Black, one of our board members and a Mikveh Guide, brought her daughter Rebecca and her granddaughter Jessica to Mayyim Hayyim to celebrate Jessica becoming a Bat Mitzvah. Diane guided Jessica, and Rebecca witnessed.

Diane, Rebecca, and Jessica were interviewed, and did not see each other’s responses to the interview questions. It is remarkable that their experiences and feelings flowed so well into one beautiful story.

Diane: Guiding a granddaughter is a concrete measure of the passage of time.  I love this journey they call life, but this was a moment when I saw before my eyes how fast this journey is actually going.  Was this the daughter of my daughter?  How is that even possible?

Rebecca: My involvement at Mayyim Hayyim has been through my mother.  I have watched her embrace the mikveh and its offerings. I have seen her face light up when she talks about a recent convert that she guided, and I have met the amazing women who work and volunteer there. The genuineness of the place and the people involved always make me feel good.

Jessica: I wanted to do my Bat Mitzvah project at Mayyim Hayyim because my Nana brought me to the annual fundraiser, and I felt connected to the stories that were shared there. My project involved creating acknowledgement cards for B’nai Mitzvah students, who immersed at Mayyim Hayyim. I will also give a tour to my friends and their parents to educate them about mikveh.

Diane: I became involved with Mayyim Hayyim because the mission spoke clearly to me. I love that we are a place for all Jews, where they can bring both their religious AND secular issues.

Jessica: My favorite moment of the day was when I was able to show my Grandma and Dad the significance of Mayyim Hayyim, by giving them a tour and showing them all the sacred parts of the mikveh. This moment gave me a lot of strength and courage.

Rebecca: Witnessing Jessica’s immersion was more powerful than we had anticipated.  Because we “knew” what the process involved and had been to the mikveh to drop things off many times, we thought an immersion to mark Jessica’s Bat Mitzvah would be a nice thing to do. Little did we realize that our tears would flow into the waters.

Jessica: During my immersion, I felt so over-whelmed with different good emotions: I was so happy to be a Jew and continue with tradition, and I felt so loved by my Nana and Mom, who were in the room with me. When I looked at myself, I just felt so beautiful.

Diane: I felt like God was actually there with us!

Rebecca: Life moves at a pretty frenetic pace. When you add Bat Mitzvah planning, and extra curricula activities into an already busy day, it is sometimes hard to stop and reflect. Starting Jessica’s Bat Mitzvah weekend off with an immersion, helped us realign ourselves.  We returned to calm, quiet and spiritual feelings. There was no pressure of time, nothing flashy, and nowhere to be but present with one another. I am hopeful that Jessica’s Jewish journey will continue with her knowing that the mikveh is there for her whenever she needs realignment.

Jessica: I feel that Mayyim Hayyim has helped me grow because it has shown me the religious and special sides of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. This experience really helped me take a step back to remember and enjoy that I am a young Jewish woman. Mayyim Hayyim is such a powerful place because it helps visitors recognize the essence of beauty, peace, and calm in the waters.

Jessica Friedman is thirteen years old and in the seventh grade at The Rashi School. After school, she likes to play sports, her favorite are basketball and lacrosse, and participate in the theater program. In the summer, she likes to sail and swim.

Rebecca Friedman (nee Black) lives in Needham with her husband Michael and their four children. They moved to the Boston area three years ago to be closer to family, and have found a great community with wonderful opportunities for everyone. 

Diane Black has been a Mayyim Hayyim board member for seven years and a Mikveh Guide for two. Being around people makes her happy, and she loves to talk with and to cook for family and friends.

Rabbi Clevenger shares her report on a wonderful class with seventh graders

Today I set out to finish our unit on Chanukah with your kids and ended up having an incredible discussion with them about the tragedy in Connecticut and Jewish ideas about life and death.  Rashi has done an excellent job of helping students talk about the Sandy Hook killings and it was not my intention to have further discussions in class, but this is where we went.  I want to share a detailed account with you, mostly because I am proud of what just happened, and also so that you can follow up if you choose.
 
Class began with my explaining that the ancient Jews believed that when terrible things happened to us, it was God’s way of letting us know that God was angry.  I spoke with them about how the descendants of the Maccabees, the heroes of Chanukah, were the Hasmoneans.  The Hasmoneans were the priests who ran the ancient Temple, and they were largely corrupt.  They sold sacrifices to the highest bidder and made the Temple more a place of business than of religion.  Many Jews were also highly assimilated into Greco-Roman culture by that time.  When the Romans came and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE, it was believed by some Jews that the Romans were the weapon that God sent to punish the Jewish people for their corruption and assimilation.
 
I shared with students that in modern times, especially since the Holocaust, most people do not believe that suffering is a punishment for sin.  I used as an example that no sane and reasonable person would ever say that the Holocaust was God’s punishment for the sins of the Jewish people.  I informed your kids that there are some people who do say that, but that they are completely wrong.  Then a student drew a connection to the shootings in Connecticut: “It would be like saying that the kids and teachers who died in Connecticut did something wrong and that God sent the shooter.”  Everyone immediately agreed that this idea is completely wrong and disgusting.
 
A student asked if the idea that people are punished for their sins is like karma.  I explained briefly that karma is a Hindu religious concept based on belief in reincarnation, and that since Jews don’t believe in reincarnation, karma doesn’t work within our theological system.  Instead I shared the text from Pirkei Avot, a text from the Mishnah (200 CE) often called “The Wisdom of our Fathers.”  The text says: “A mitzvah leads to a mitzvah.  A transgression leads to a transgression.  It’s good to be righteous.”  We noted that this text is not about people, just about mitzvahs and transgressions, and that it ends with the very general statement that it’s good to be righteous.  I shared with the students the list of 26 Acts of Kindness that were sent home this morning, and suggested that engaging in this work would be a way to ensure that a mitzvah leads to a mitzvah, but also that a transgression can lead to a mitzvah, that we can respond to tragedy by trying to fill the world with more goodness.
 
Then we got into a conversation about whether it is sadder when children die versus adults (who may be spouses and parents themselves).  There was respectful dialogue on that question.  One student asked why the principal and school psychologist at Sandy Hook tried to stop the gunman, and others responded with their beliefs, also varied and respectful.  A student asked why Rashi chose not to inform students and teachers of the events in CT during the school day on Friday, and I explained about a desire to keep things calm in school and of a respect for the rights of parents to share this information with their children in a way that each parent felt was appropriate.
 
We all left the room knowing that something very special and important had happened here.  One student chuckled as he realized that this incredibly deep conversation had come from a simple text study about Chanukah.  It just goes to show that our kids are making connections that we can’t even imagine, and that they are eager and ready to use what they know to make sense of the world in which we live.  None of this surprises me, but I am so grateful to have been part of this moment with your kids.

P.S. I also told the kids that I was willing to bet that the thing that each of their parents wanted to do most after hearing about Friday’s tragedy was to hold their kids.  I described my own teary-eyed drive to pick up my children on Friday afternoon, how even though I knew that they were safe, I just wanted to hold them.  I suggested that they ask you if this was indeed what you were thinking and feeling too.  Be prepared for the question.

Dear Rashi Community,

At a heartbreaking time like this, our core values at Rashi can be a valuable guide and foundation to doing good in the world.  Our tradition teaches that one way to counter-act evil is to outweigh the evil with ma’asim tovim – good deeds. We learn from the rabbis that “the world rests on three things, on Torah, on Avoda (worship) and on Gemilut Chasadim (deeds of loving kindness). Love, compassion, prayer and deeds of loving kindness for all people can help re-align the world.

It is in that spirit that the Rashi community will be joining others from all over the country to commit to doing acts of kindness in memory of those who lost their lives on that tragic day and in honor of those who survived.

When should you start?

You can begin right now! We have included a list of concrete examples of acts of kindness. Our hope is that this list will get you thinking about the range of possibilities and inspire you to create your own expressions of kindness.

How can you start? 

Share your acts of kindness with the Rashi community by going to the Rashi blog and posting them in the comment box. There you also will be able to learn what others are doing in our school community.

Our goal is to “bundle” every 26 acts of kindness that we receive from the Rashi community and share them with the Sandy Hook community.

While the profound sadness remains, turning to our core values and doing ma’asim tovim – good deeds – is a meaningful place to start.

Ideas for Acts of Kindness

Walk a neighbor’s dog.

Photograph someone being kind to another.

Transport someone who can’t drive.

Invite a classmate to eat lunch with you.

Treat a friend to the movies.

Make a slide show of favorite photos for a friend or family member.

Make dinner for someone who has just returned from the hospital.

Plant a tree.

Surprise someone and invite him/her for a first-ever sleep over.

Write notes of appreciation at least once a week.

Give up your seat for someone, not just an elderly person.

Make a video for someone with whom you haven’t spoken in awhile.

Smile a lot. Hug a lot.

Donate to a food pantry or homeless shelter.

Tutor a student; be a reading buddy.

Put some coins in someone else’s parking meter.

Make a card at home and send it to a friend.

Help an elderly neighbor carry the garbage out.

Tell all your family members how much you appreciate them.

Bring flowers to someone who is sad.

Chanukah, the Festival of Light, occurs during the darkest and shortest of our days. The Chanukiah is a metaphor for light so how can we make life and the world around us less of a “dark” place? Could we incorporate behaviors and events to “illuminate” darkness through loving-kindness?  Image

Try to incorporate these kavanot along with the traditional Chanukah blessing into your family’s candle lighting each night. Hopefully they will enhance the meaning of your Chanukah celebration and illuminate the many blessings and opportunities in our lives to bring more light and goodness into the world.

Shamash – For Those in Need May the light of these Chanukah candles remind us that no matter how bad our situation might be, there is always someone who can benefit from our help. May the One who brings us light help us to notice those in need and enable us to reach out and support them.

Magical Moments

I know we all have some magical moments in our classrooms on any given day.

Yesterday morning was one of them! The entire middle school filled the beautiful sunlit third floor atrium in order to hear, and then vote for potential officers for the 2012-2013 Rashi Student Government. Though dressed for fun and filled with spirit, they listened respectfully to each other. I was so moved by the moment… it so exemplified all of our core values – ruach, kehillah, kavod, limud and tzedek (in what some of the candidates offered) – that I wrote this poem.
